Why This Route?

Kaohsiung is Taiwan's most layered city — harbor, island, art warehouses, and jaw-dropping religious architecture all in one day. Start with a ferry to Cijin Island for rainbow-colored art, historic cannons, a starlit tunnel, and the freshest seafood street; spend the afternoon at Pier-2 Art Center where old warehouses burst with contemporary creativity; end at Lotus Pond's Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, following the ancient tradition of "enter through the dragon, exit through the tiger" for good fortune.

Highlights

🌈 Cijin Coastal Art — Rainbow Church & Shell Museum

The Rainbow Church on Cijin Beach is a geometric art installation with colorful frames set against blue sky and sea — pure Instagram gold. Next door, Cijin Shell Museum houses over 2,000 species from around the world, great for kids.

Photo Tips: Morning light from the east saturates the colors best. Shoot from the front with the ocean as backdrop.

⭐ Starry Tunnel — Walk Through a Mountain to the Sea

This 200-meter military tunnel from the Japanese era is now decorated with LED constellation lights. Walking through the cool, dark passage feels like strolling under a night sky. The moment you emerge, you're greeted by a dramatic rocky coastline — the contrast is breathtaking.

Photo Tips: Stand at the tunnel exit and shoot outward to frame the ocean inside the tunnel arch. Night mode on your phone works great in the dim interior.

🏮 Cihou Fort & Kaohsiung Lighthouse — Commanding Heights

Cihou Fort, built during the Qing Dynasty, guarded Kaohsiung Harbor. The red-brick gate inscription reads "Mighty Awe of the South." A few more minutes uphill brings you to the gleaming white Kaohsiung Lighthouse (Cihou Lighthouse) with 360° panoramic views of the harbor, downtown skyline, Sizihwan Bay, and all of Cijin.

Photo Tips: The platform beside the lighthouse is the best spot for harbor panoramas. Late afternoon golden hour with sunset over Sizihwan is spectacular.

🦐 Cijin Old Street — Seaside Seafood Feast

Cijin Old Street starts right at the ferry terminal — you can't miss the aroma of grilled squid, fried seafood rolls, and roasted baby squid pulling you in.

Must-Eat:

  • Wan Er Seafood — Locals' favorite stir-fry, fresh and affordable
  • Grilled Squid — Street vendors everywhere, best eaten fresh off the grill
  • Cijin Red Meat Soup — Unique local specialty, hearty and filling
  • Sweet Potato Puffs — Crispy outside, chewy inside, old-school street snack

🎨 Pier-2 Art Center — Creativity Explodes in Old Warehouses

Pier-2 is Kaohsiung's flagship creative hub, converted from waterfront warehouses. Giant steel robot sculptures, full-wall graffiti murals, indie bookshops, craft markets, and the light rail gliding past — the whole complex feels like an open-air contemporary art museum.

Must-Do:

  • Dayi Warehouse Cluster — Most creative shops and cafés
  • Penglai Warehouse Cluster — Major exhibitions and installations
  • Steel Robots — The park's most iconic photo spot, welded from recycled parts
  • Hamasen Railway Park — Adjacent old rail yard turned park, great for strolling
Photo Tips: Hidden murals and installations lurk in the alleys between warehouses — walk slowly. The light rail passing by adds wonderful port-city atmosphere to your shots.

🐉 Dragon & Tiger Pagodas (Lotus Pond) — Enter Dragon, Exit Tiger

The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas are among Kaohsiung's most recognizable landmarks. Two seven-story towers with dragon and tiger entrances — tradition says you must "enter through the dragon's mouth, exit through the tiger's mouth" to ward off evil and attract good fortune. Inside, colorful murals depict tales of loyalty and filial piety.

Must-Do:

  • Dragon in, Tiger out — Follow tradition for blessings
  • Climb the towers — Views of the entire Lotus Pond and Banping Mountain
  • Sunset watch — Lotus Pond faces west; evening reflections are spectacular
Photo Tips: Shoot from the opposite shore for full reflections of both pagodas. Best light at 17:00-17:30 when sky and water colors are richest.

🚌 Can You Get There by Public Transit?

This route has medium-high transit feasibility — Cijin and Pier-2 are very convenient, Lotus Pond needs one extra transfer.

Cijin (convenient): MRT Orange Line to Sizihwan Station → walk to Gushan Ferry → ferry to Cijin (~20 min total). Rent bikes on the island.

Pier-2 (very convenient): MRT Orange Line Yanchengpu Station (5 min walk), or LRT Pier-2 Dayi Station direct.

Lotus Pond (needs transfer): From Pier-2 take MRT Orange Line to Formosa Boulevard → transfer Red Line to Zuoying Station → 15 min walk or Red 51 bus. Or take Taiwan Tourist Shuttle — Lotus Pond Line.

Charter vs Transit:

  • Cijin + Pier-2 works great by MRT/LRT
  • Adding Lotus Pond means more transfers and walking; charter saves significant time
  • Charter bonus: driver picks you up at Gushan Pier — no need to walk back to the ferry station
