Why This Route?
Yangmingshan National Park is Taipei's backyard volcano park, just 30 minutes from downtown. Where else can you stand next to hissing sulfur vents in the morning, have lunch surrounded by flower fields, and hike a trail with views of Taipei 101 in the afternoon? Every stop is less than 15 minutes apart by car, so you spend your time exploring, not commuting.
Route Highlights
🌋 Xiaoyoukeng: The Earth Breathing
You smell Xiaoyoukeng before you see it. Thick white steam pours from cracks in the hillside, and the ground is stained yellow and white with sulfur crystals. This is one of Taiwan's most accessible post-volcanic landscapes: a moonscape of fumaroles, bubbling mud, and mineral deposits.
Standing on the viewing platform, you realize the ground beneath your feet is very much alive. Taiwan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, and Xiaoyoukeng makes that tangible. No need to fly to Iceland. Taipei's own volcanic vents are right here.
A trail from Xiaoyoukeng leads to Qixing Main Peak (1,120m, Taipei's highest point) in about 20 minutes, but today's itinerary keeps things easy. The viewing platform alone is spectacular.
Photo tip: Morning light works best. Stand on the left side of the platform to frame the fumaroles against the distant ridgeline. Use HDR mode so the white steam doesn't blow out your exposure.
🐃 Qingtiangang: Taipei's Sky Ranch

Ten minutes from Xiaoyoukeng, the landscape flips completely. The barren volcanic terrain gives way to rolling green grasslands where water buffalo graze freely. Qingtiangang was a Japanese-era cattle ranch, and the buffalo have been here ever since. The circular walking trail is flat and easy, with 360-degree views of the Taipei basin and the distant coast on clear days.

The buffalo look docile, but they're semi-wild. Keep at least 10 meters away. Photos are fine; touching is not.
Food nearby: The visitor center sells drinks and simple snacks, but save your appetite for Zhuzihu. A grilled sausage from the stand near the parking lot will tide you over.
Photo tip: Buffalo are usually near the trail between 9-10 AM. Shoot from a low angle (crouch down) to make the grassland look vast. Overcast skies actually work better here: softer light, richer greens.
🌸 Zhuzihu: Hidden Valley of Flowers
Zhuzihu is a volcanic crater valley turned flower paradise. From March to May, the fields fill with white calla lilies. May through July, hydrangeas take over in blue, purple, and pink. Even outside flower season, the valley's scenery and restaurants make it worth a long stop.
The calla lily season lets you pick your own flowers for around NT$100-150 per bunch. During hydrangea season, farms grow the flowers into towering walls of color. Most charge a small entrance fee (deductible from purchases), and the quality is genuinely impressive.
Must-eat: Zhuzihu is famous for its wild vegetable restaurants. Mountain-grown sweet potato leaves, bird's nest fern, Schefflera shoots, and free-range white-cut chicken. Try Qingcaiyuan or Minyang Farm. The white-cut chicken is the star: tender meat, springy skin, dipped in ginger-soy sauce. Simple and unforgettable.
Photo tip: For calla lilies, arrive right when farms open (around 8:30-9:00 AM). Flowers are freshest, crowds thinnest. Wear white or pastel to match the lilies. For hydrangeas, darker clothing makes you pop against the blooms. After rain, close-up shots of water droplets on petals look stunning.
🥾 Datun Mountain Trail: Skyline Viewpoint

Datun Mountain Trail is one of Yangmingshan's easiest walks. From the parking area to the main viewpoint takes about 30-40 minutes on stone paths and boardwalks. The trail cuts through low silvergrass and arrow bamboo, keeping the views wide open the whole way.
From the viewpoint, clear days reveal Taipei 101, Guanyin Mountain, the Tamsui River meeting the sea, and even distant Keelung Islet. In autumn (October-November), the hillside turns silver-white with blooming silvergrass, transforming the trail into something otherworldly.
Photo tip: Late afternoon (3-4 PM) is golden hour for the Taipei skyline. The low sun gilds the entire city. In autumn, backlit silvergrass practically glows. The viewpoint gets very windy; hold onto your hat.
🌺 Yangming Park Flower Clock: Seasons in Bloom
Yangming Park is the park's grand entrance, and its flower clock is the landmark everyone photographs. Every February and March, the Yangmingshan Flower Festival turns the park into a corridor of cherry blossoms, azaleas, and camellias. The pink cherry blossom tunnel is one of Taipei's most iconic spring images.
Even outside festival season, the park is beautifully maintained with pavilions, bridges, and streams. The flower beds in front of the clock change with the seasons.
Photo tip: During flower season, arrive before 8 AM for crowd-free cherry blossom shots. The clock faces south, so morning gives you front-lit photos.

Practical Tips
- Best seasons: Cherry blossoms Feb-Mar, calla lilies Mar-May, hydrangeas May-Jul. Silvergrass in autumn (Oct-Nov) is also gorgeous
- What to wear: The mountain is 5-8°C cooler than downtown. Bring a light jacket even in summer. Sneakers are fine for the trails
- Xiaoyoukeng warning: The sulfur smell is strong. Those with cardiovascular conditions or asthma should be cautious and leave if feeling unwell
- Flower season traffic: Yangde Boulevard gets badly congested on weekends during flower season. A chartered car beats driving yourself because drivers know the back roads
- Restaurant tip: Book Zhuzihu restaurants on weekends, especially during flower season. Weekdays are walk-in friendly
- Rain plan: Afternoon fog and drizzle are common on the mountain. Bring an umbrella. Misty Zhuzihu is actually at its most atmospheric in light rain
