Why This Route?
Tainan isn't just temples and street food — its western coastline hides a dreamy "salt route" of pure white landscapes. From the towering Qigu Salt Mountain to the mirror-like sunset reflections at Jingzaijiao's century-old salt fields, to the ethereal Crystal Church — this route showcases Tainan's most photogenic, romantic side. Cap it all off at Anping Old Street with shrimp rolls and silky tofu pudding for the most Tainan ending possible.
Highlights
🏔️ Qigu Salt Mountain — Snow in Southern Taiwan
Qigu Salt Mountain is a living monument to Taiwan's salt industry. This ~20-meter-tall hill of pure white salt looks like a snow-capped peak from afar. Each year, different large-scale art installations top the mountain, making it a constantly evolving photo spot.
Must-Do:
- Climb to the summit — Takes about 5 minutes, offers 360° views of salt fields and fish ponds
- Try salt snacks — Salt-brined tea eggs, salt popsicles — surprisingly delicious
- Art installations — Themes change annually, check what's on display
🌅 Jingzaijiao Tile-Paved Salt Fields — Sunset Mirrors
📷 Photo by Timo Volz (@magict1911) on Unsplash
Jingzaijiao is Taiwan's oldest surviving tile-paved salt field, with over 200 years of salt-making history. The geometric crystallization pools look like mosaic art, and on clear evenings, the entire field becomes a giant mirror reflecting the blazing sunset — earning its reputation as "Taiwan's most beautiful sunset."
Must-Do:
- Try salt harvesting — Visitors can rake and collect salt using traditional tools
- Wait for sunset — Arrive 30 minutes before sundown for the best reflections
- Buy salt souvenirs — Salt flowers, salt soap, salt-brine tofu pudding
💒 Crystal Church — White Romance by the Sea
The Crystal Church stands beside Beimen's salt fields. Its white steel frame and water reflection create the illusion of a floating chapel. Though you can't go inside (it's an art installation), it's become Beimen's most iconic landmark and the most romantic spot on Tainan's west coast.
Photo Tips: Shoot from the front on a blue-sky day. The shallow pool creates mirror reflections — crouch low for the best angle. Even more atmospheric at sunset.
🎨 Beimen Visitor Center — Murals & Whale
Beimen Visitor Center features massive 3D murals themed around love and weddings — a selfie paradise for couples. Inside, a rare sperm whale specimen (stranded in 2005) stretches 14 meters long. The center also covers the ecology and salt history of the Southwest Coast.
Must-See:
- 3D murals — Stand at marked spots for optical illusion photos
- Sperm whale specimen — One of Taiwan's most complete cetacean displays
- Qianlaiyi General Store — Retro shop decorated with seashells and mosaics, right next door
🏮 Anping Old Street — Taiwan's First Street
📷 Photo by Ricky LK (@rickyrynselo) on Unsplash
Anping is where Taiwan's recorded history began — the Dutch built Fort Zeelandia here, and Koxinga landed on these shores. Walking the old street, you'll spot "Sword Lions" embedded in walls — Anping's unique talisman, each with different expressions. Hunting for Sword Lions is the most fun Easter egg of exploring Anping.
Must-Eat:
- Zhou's Shrimp Rolls — Anping's signature: crispy outside, bouncy shrimp filling
- Tongji Anping Tofu Pudding — Silky smooth traditional douhua with toppings
- Lin Yongtai Xing Candied Fruits — Century-old shop, sweet-sour plums as souvenirs
- Anping Oyster Omelette — Tainan-style with a sweeter sauce, distinctly different from the north
Photo Tips: The red brick walls with the white watchtower of Anping Fort are the classic composition. Sword Lions are hidden throughout the alleys — exploring on foot is the best way. Anping Harbor sunset is gorgeous too.

Practical Tips
- Best Season: Oct-Mar is most comfortable; summer is extremely hot and exposed — sunscreen is essential
- Sunset at Jingzaijiao: If you want to catch sunset at the salt fields, reverse the route — Anping first, then Beimen in the evening
- Footwear: Wear sandals or waterproof shoes at the salt fields (you'll step in brine); comfortable shoes elsewhere
- Sun Protection: The west coast has almost no shade — hat, sunscreen, sunglasses are non-negotiable
- Crystal Church is free: Outdoor public space, no ticket needed, open 24/7
🚌 Can You Get There by Public Transit?
Qigu Salt Mountain and Jingzaijiao are on Tainan's remote west coast — public transit is very inconvenient. While some buses exist, they're infrequent and don't connect the attractions efficiently. Covering this route by bus in one day is nearly impossible.
Anping Old Street (OK):
- Take Bus 2 or 88 Anping Line from Tainan Station (~30 min)
- Anping attractions are walkable
- Getting to Qigu from Tainan city requires Blue Trunk Line + transfer to Blue 10 — 1.5+ hours one way, few runs
- Jingzaijiao and Beimen are close but no direct bus between them
- Attractions are 10-20 km apart with no convenient shuttle
- Anping only: public transit works fine
- Full salt route (Qigu → Jingzaijiao → Crystal Church → Anping): charter is the only practical option
- Scooter rental (~NT$300-400/day) is a backpacker alternative in Tainan
