Why This Route?
Kenting sits at the very bottom of Taiwan. It is a tropical beach town where you can visit a historic lighthouse, swim in turquoise bays, walk along coral-reef cliffs, and eat your way through a beachside night market, all in one day. The drive from Kaohsiung takes about two hours. You start in the city and end up on palm-lined coastal roads with the ocean stretching out beside you. If you love sunshine, salt water, and fresh seafood, this route belongs on your list.
Highlights
🏠 Eluanbi Lighthouse: Taiwan's Southernmost Landmark
📷 Photo by Houses Cheung (@housescheung) on Unsplash
This is not just any lighthouse. Back in the Qing Dynasty, pirates were a real problem, so builders added a moat and gun ports around the tower. That makes it one of the few armed lighthouses on the planet. The white tower against Kenting's deep blue sky looks stunning from every angle.
The surrounding Eluanbi Park has coral limestone formations along a loop trail. The walk takes about 30 to 40 minutes. From the parking lot, another 15-minute walk brings you to the "Southernmost Point of Taiwan" marker. You stand on a wooden boardwalk and watch the Bashi Channel meet the Pacific Ocean right below your feet. It feels like the edge of the world.
Must-Eat:
- Grilled flying fish stall next to the park. Whole fish, charcoal-grilled, smoky and savory.
- Harry Potter Corn Cup from a tiny stall by Kenting Elementary School. Cheesy corn soup in a cup.
🏖️ Nanwan (South Bay): Kenting's Most Popular Crescent Beach

Nanwan is the beach everyone pictures when they think of Kenting. Golden sand curves into a perfect crescent. The water fades from pale turquoise near the shore to deep cobalt further out. This is where all the water sports happen: banana boats, jet skis, snorkeling, parasailing. Even if you just sit on the sand and watch the surfers, it is deeply relaxing.
The sunsets here are something else. The sky turns gold, then orange, then purple, with the silhouette of Dajian Mountain on the horizon. It is one of those scenes you remember long after you leave.
Must-Eat:
- Charcoal-roasted corn from the beachside stalls. Brushed with a house-made sauce, best eaten in the sea breeze.
- Didi Xiaochi is a local favorite with Southeast Asian flavors. Try the pepper-fried chicken or basil pork rice.
🌊 Longpan Park: Boundless Clifftop Grasslands
📷 Photo by Timo Volz (@magict1911) on Unsplash
Longpan Park feels nothing like Nanwan. Nanwan is soft. Longpan is wild. You stand on top of a coral-reef cliff and look straight down into the deep blue Pacific. Jagged rocks, wind-bent shrubs, and open grassland stretch out in every direction. People say it feels like the edge of the world, and they are not exaggerating.
Longpan is also one of Taiwan's best stargazing spots. Light pollution here is almost zero. During Milky Way season, April through September, you can see the galactic arch with your bare eyes. If your charter trip goes into the evening, do not skip this stop.
Photo Tips: The light is best around 3 to 4 PM, when the grass turns gold-green against the dark blue ocean. The wind is fierce, so hold onto your hat. For Milky Way shots, come between 2 and 4 AM with a tripod and manual exposure settings.
🐱 Maobitou Park: Bashi Channel Panoramic Viewpoint
📷 Photo by Timo Volz (@magict1911) on Unsplash
The name means "Cat's Nose Cape," and it comes from a coral rock that looks like a crouching cat. From the observation deck, you get a wide-open view of the blue Bashi Channel. The fringing reef here is the most developed on Taiwan's main island. At low tide, a broad coral platform appears, full of sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and tiny fish darting through the shallows.
The walk from the parking lot to the viewpoint takes about 10 minutes on a flat, easy path. Anyone can do it. The two-level observation deck gives you wide views from above and a lower angle that frames the cat-shaped rock perfectly. The whole park takes 20 to 30 minutes.
Must-Eat:
- Fried squid balls at the park entrance. Freshly fried, crispy outside, springy inside.
🌅 Kenting Main Street: Taiwan's Most Tropical Night Market
During the day, this is just a regular highway. Come evening, it turns into Taiwan's most vacation-feeling night market. Palm trees line both sides. Surf shops blast music. The air smells like grilled meat mixed with ocean salt. It feels more like a beach boardwalk than a typical night market.
Must-Eat:
- Xiaodu Baozi is the most famous shop in Kenting. People line up all afternoon for the lion's-head bun and egg-yolk mushroom pork bun.
- Yipin Luwei is a long-running stall where you pick your ingredients and they braise everything fresh.
- Grilled Thai shrimp from several stalls along the street. Pick the plumpest prawns for the best flavor.
- QQ Egg Milk pairs egg-shaped cakes with rich milk tea. A Kenting street classic.

Practical Tips
- Best Season: October through April is most comfortable (25-30°C / 77-86°F). Avoid July-September typhoon season
- Avoid Crowds: Weekdays are significantly quieter. Spring Scream (early April) and New Year's Eve are peak-packed — book your charter early
- What to Wear: Sun protection is priority #1. Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen are non-negotiable. Bring a light jacket for Longpan's fierce wind. Wear closed-toe shoes for Eluanbi's coral-gravel trails
- Foehn Wind Warning: October through March brings powerful "Luoshan Wind" (foehn) to the Hengchun Peninsula; Longpan and Maobitou are especially exposed, so secure loose belongings
- Kenting Night Market: Usually opens around 5-6 PM; weekends are livelier than weekdays
