Why This Route?
This route packs northern Taiwan's three most iconic experiences into one day: Yehliu's surreal rock formations, Shifen's sky lanterns and waterfall, and Jiufen's atmospheric mountain village. Starting from Taipei, it's the perfect introduction to Taiwan's natural wonders and cultural charm.
Highlights
🪨 Yehliu Geopark — Nature's Sculpture Gallery

Yehliu is unlike anywhere else in Taiwan. Millions of years of ocean wind and waves have carved this narrow cape into an open-air museum of bizarre rock formations. The star attraction is the "Queen's Head" — a mushroom rock that, viewed from the side, looks exactly like a regal queen in profile. Geologists warn her neck gets thinner each year, so visit while you can.

Beyond the Queen's Head, the park contains hundreds of named formations: Fairy's Shoe, Candle Rock, Ice Cream Rock, and many more. Walking the coastal trail with Pacific waves crashing on one side and ancient stone sculptures on the other is an unforgettable experience.
Photo Tips: Queue for the Queen's Head forms quickly — head there first thing. Before 9 AM is quietest. The 45-degree side angle gives the best "queen profile" shot. Area 3 at the far end has the most dramatic coastline with fewer crowds.
🏮 Shifen Old Street — Release a Sky Lantern on the Railway Tracks
📷 Photo by Winston Chen (@winstonchen) on Unsplash
Shifen's charm lies in its railway tracks running straight through the middle of the street. Between trains on the Pingxi Line, the tracks become a stage for sky lantern releases. Pick your lantern color (each represents a different wish), write your hopes with a calligraphy brush, light the fuel cell, and watch it drift into the sky. It's genuinely magical.
The old street is lined with snack stalls — try the peanut ice cream wrap, a local classic. Don't miss snapping a photo with the green Pingxi Line train at Shifen Station.
🌊 Shifen Waterfall — Taiwan's Mini Niagara

A 15-minute walk from the old street brings you to Shifen Waterfall, often called "Taiwan's Niagara Falls." At 40 meters wide and 20 meters tall, the horseshoe-shaped curtain of water is genuinely impressive. Mist sprays across the viewing platform — refreshing in summer, so bring a light jacket.
Photo Tips: Visit between 2-3 PM when sunlight hits the falls head-on for the best chance of catching a rainbow. The viewing platform offers a perfect frontal composition.
🏮 Jiufen Old Street — The Village That Inspired Spirited Away
📷 Photo by Daniel Gregoire (@danielgregoire) on Unsplash
Jiufen is the hillside village rumored to have inspired Miyazaki's Spirited Away. Whether or not that's true, walking down the Shuchi Road steps at dusk as hundreds of red lanterns flicker to life creates an undeniably enchanting atmosphere.

Jishan Street is the main thoroughfare, a narrow lane packed with food stalls and souvenir shops. When you need a break, duck into a traditional teahouse, order a pot of Oriental Beauty tea, and gaze out at the ocean stretching to the horizon.
Must-Eat:
- A-Gan-Yi Taro Balls — hilltop taro ball shop with panoramic bay views
- Lai A-Po Taro Balls — a rival classic with richer taro flavor
- A-Lan Grasscake — handmade Hakka-style rice cakes, sweet and savory varieties
- Zhang Ji Fish Balls — a steaming bowl of fish ball soup after all those stairs

Practical Tips
- Best Season: Autumn (Oct-Nov) brings cool weather, fewer rainy days, and atmospheric mist in Jiufen
- Avoid Crowds: Weekdays are dramatically less crowded, especially at Jiufen. Arrive at Yehliu before 9 AM
- What to Wear: Comfortable walking shoes (Jiufen is all stairs, Shifen has trail paths). Bring a light jacket for wind and mist
- Weather Note: The north coast and Jiufen are notoriously rainy — bring a compact umbrella
- Why Charter: No direct bus connects all three spots. DIY transit means hours of transfers. A charter car covers everything in one smooth day

| Attractions | 3 spots (Yehliu + Shifen + Jiufen) | 4-5 spots (add Golden Waterfall, Yin-Yang Sea) |

Things to Note
- Tight schedule: Covering all 3 spots in one day means departing by 07:30 — plan your transfers carefully
- Pingxi Line runs infrequently: About once per hour — miss it and you wait an hour
- No direct route from Yehliu to Shifen: Must transfer via Keelung → TRA to Ruifang → Pingxi Line
- EasyCard is essential: Works on all buses and trains — no need to buy individual tickets
- Stay at Jiufen until dusk: The lanterns on Shuqi Road are most atmospheric after dark, and Bus 1062 runs direct to Taipei
