Why Choose Yilan for a Day Trip?

Yilan is Taipei's backyard paradise — less than two hours by car, yet a completely different world: jade-green mountains of the Snow Mountain Range, the tranquil Dongshan River, Taiwan's finest traditional crafts village, and a night market that will ruin all other night markets for you. This route is perfect for travelers who want a genuine local experience beyond Taipei's tourist crowds.

Highlights

♨️ Jiaoxi Hot Springs 礁溪溫泉 — Free Outdoor Foot Bath, the Perfect Arrival Ritual

Your first stop in Yilan: the legendary free public foot soaking pool next to Jiaoxi Station. This sodium bicarbonate spring (nicknamed "Beauty Spring" for its skin-softening properties) runs at 38–40°C and is open all day at no cost. No changing required — just roll up your trousers and find a stone seat.

While your feet soak, look up: Jiaoxi sits in a rare flat plain completely surrounded by mountains. The contrast of a lowland hot spring surrounded by snow-capped peaks is something you won't find anywhere else in Taiwan.

After soaking, stroll Jiaoxi Road for the iconic green onion flatbread made from Sanxing scallions — the sweetest, most aromatic scallions in Taiwan.

Must-Eat:

  • Scallion flatbread (蔥油餅) — Freshly grilled with Sanxing scallions, impossibly fragrant
  • Cow's tongue crackers (牛舌餅) — A Yilan-exclusive flaky pastry shaped like a tongue
Photo Tip: The foot bath pool reflects warm lantern light beautifully after sunset — arrive early evening for atmospheric shots.

🏮 Yilan National Center for Traditional Arts 傳藝中心 — Old Taiwan, Alive

The National Center for Traditional Arts is the best cultural attraction in Taiwan — 24 hectares of fully operational Qing Dynasty-era Minnan streetscape where every building is a working craft shop, performance stage, or food stall.

The magic is in hands-on participation: wood carving, puppet head painting, sugar-pulling candy (糖蔥), clay figurine molding — nearly every shop lets you try under a master craftsperson's guidance. Budget at least 2.5–3 hours.

For lunch, the Food Street inside serves small-portion traditional Taiwanese dishes: bowl pudding (碗粿), oyster omelette (蚵仔煎), and hand-made Yilan sweets. Perfect for sampling many things.

Must-Eat:

  • Bowl pudding (碗粿) — Savory steamed rice pudding with pork filling, Taiwanese comfort food
  • Sugar-pull candy (糖蔥) — Handmade pulled sugar candy, a dying art found only here
  • Grandma's Shaved Ice (阿婆冰) — Red bean milk ice, the park's most beloved dessert stall
Photo Tip: The main gate looks best before noon with clear light on the red lanterns. The covered old street glows beautifully around 4 PM when the lanterns light up.

🛶 Dongshan River Water Park 冬山河親水公園 — River Serenity

The Dongshan River Water Park is Yilan locals' favorite weekend escape. A cycling path follows the river for nearly 10 kilometers, with water lotus, ginger lilies, and Taiwan rain trees lining both banks through all four seasons.

You can rent bicycles for a leisurely riverside ride, or opt for a kayak or paddle boat to experience the Yilan plain and distant mountains from water level — a perspective that changes everything. Late afternoon, when golden light hits the river and Turtle Island (龜山島) appears on the horizon, is Yilan at its most beautiful.

Photo Tip: The wooden boats under the red bridge photograph beautifully in soft morning or late afternoon light. Use a wide angle from water level to capture the river's full expanse.

🌙 Luodong Night Market 羅東夜市 — The Night Market That Makes Taipei Look Ordinary

Luodong Night Market is everything a Taiwan night market should be — authentic, affordable, and entirely unpretentious. The star is Yilan lamb (宜蘭羊肉): mountain-raised on lush pastureland, it has zero gaminess and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness. Lamb fried rice is a revelation.

Don't leave without Sanxing scallion pancakes (三星蔥蔥油餅) — grilled fresh, these use Taiwan's most prized scallions, sweeter and more aromatic than anything you've tried before.

Must-Eat:

  • Lamb fried rice (羊肉炒飯) — Yilan's signature dish, found only here
  • Sanxing scallion pancake (三星蔥蔥油餅) — Freshly grilled, sweet and fragrant
  • Deep-fried milk (炸牛奶) — Crispy outside, silky custard inside
  • Rice cracker rolls (米糕筒) — Ancient sweet snack wrapped in puffed rice
